These top U.S. cities will pay you to relocate




Life in big U.S. cities is expensive, with rising inflation, high interest rates, and soaring health care costs. Thus, it has almost become common for many Americans to look for areas in which their dollars can stretch further. One still-emerging solution involves relocation packages being offered by some small towns across the country as a way to attract new residents.


These are relocation incentives, or workers' relocation packages, offering a host of benefits in several cities. The idea behind this is to lure workers to their locations. The benefits vary from cash to free gyms, co-working spaces, and event social opportunities, including dinner with community leaders. Some of these five-figure relocation incentives also include homeownership perks.


Such programs are very far from uncontroversial. Locals often feel that such initiatives favor newcomers over long-time residents, increasing social tensions and the cost of living. In cities where such programs have attracted high-earning professionals, property prices tend to rise and communities are divided. Examples include Miami and Austin.


Some programs sputter, as companies reverse course on remote work; take Arkansas's "Life Works Here" campaign, which offered cash and other incentives to lure tech workers - and has already ended. Vermont's program offered up to $10,000 to qualified workers and is ending now after five years. Many others, however, remain in operation, chasing applicants with enticements in the form of packages, offers, and benefits.


9 U.S. Cities Paying People to Relocate to their Cities:


1. Tulsa, Oklahoma: The Tulsa Remote offers $10,000 to remote workers and entrepreneurs who move there for at least a year. It has brought in close to 2,900 people since 2018 and pumped money into the local economy. It is expected to grow to 4,000 participants by 2027.


2. West Virginia: For $12,000 over two years, in addition to outdoor activities and access to coworking spaces, Ascend West Virginia. The program had a 95% retention rate and has high program/incentive expansion designs.


3. Indiana: There are a number of programs offering packages throughout the state, including Noblesville's $15,000 package or a $7,200 grant in Evansville, to attract new residents into their towns.


4. Topeka, Kansas: "Choose Topeka" offers $15,000 in employer-matched incentives. There's a 95% retention rate.


5. Kentucky: Many cities in Kentucky offer incentive packages, such as cash payouts and childcare discounts, to attract worthy, professional medical and school workers.


6. The Shoals, Alabama: Offers a whopping $10,000 to applicants who prove they have relocated to the remote Shoals to live in northwest Alabama; by all accounts, applications have come from across the country.


7. Rochester, New York: "Greater ROC Remote" doles out $10,000 in grants, among other incentives for homebuyers, in order to attract new workers remotely.


8. Alaska: Rather than charging immigrants taxes, Alaska pays an annual dividend to all residents as part of the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) in support of life in the state.


9. Michigan: The Michigander Scholars program offers college students scholarships and internship awards in furtherance of luring young professionals to the state's growing sectors of electric vehicles and technology.


The incentive to relocate is one of the new ways of attracting talent, in particular remote workers and freelancers, but one that simultaneously carries its challenges, which should be managed with care for community harmony.
