If you're considering a temporary stay in Canada, International Experience Canada (IEC) is a great option. This government-run program allows young people from over 30 partner countries to live, work, and travel in Canada on a temporary basis. Simply put, it's a direct gateway to experience life in Canada for a limited time. Originally launched in 1951, the IEC program has evolved significantly over the years to better support international mobility and cultural exchange.
What is the Eligibility for International Experience Canada?
Citizenship: Must be a citizen/passport holder of a country that has a bilateral youth mobility agreement with Canada. Eligibility varies by country and not all countries have access to all three IEC categories (Working Holiday, Young Professionals, International Co-op).
Age Limit: Generally between 18 and 30 years old, though some countries allow up to 35. You remain eligible if you apply before reaching the maximum age, even if you turn older during processing.
Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay. Work permits will not be issued beyond the passport’s expiry date.
Proof of Funds: You must show at least CAD $2,500 in personal funds to support yourself upon arrival. This is typically proven through a recent bank statement in your name.
Health Insurance: You are required to have health insurance covering medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation for your entire stay. Lack of proof at the border may result in denied entry.
Medical Exam: A medical exam may be necessary if you’ve lived in certain countries for 6+ months in the past year, or if you plan to work in health care, child care, teaching, or agriculture. Exams must be conducted by an IRCC-approved physician.
Admissibility: Applicants must be criminally and medically admissible to Canada and must not pose a security risk.
Return Travel Proof: You must either show a return ticket or proof of sufficient funds to purchase one.
Process of International Experience Canada
Check eligibility: First go through the eligibility criteria which are mentioned above.
Select an IEC category: Choose one category from the pool of three categories. All countries are not eligible for all three categories.
Create and submit an IEC profile: Sign in or register on the IRCC portal then make a profile and answer the eligibility questions and finally submit the profile to the appropriate tool.
Invitation to apply:Invitations are issued in rounds over the course of the season, with selections made randomly and based on available quotas and category-specific spots.
Receive and accept ITA: There is a period of 10 days to accept the invitation and after acceptance there are 20 days to fill and submit the application.
Submit Work Permit application: Fill the work permit application which requires certain documents.
Biometrics Collection: After application is submitted, the applicant will receive a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL). After that they have to provide their fingerprints and photograph at a Visa Application Centre (VAC).
Wait for processing: Processing time differs from person to person, sometimes it can also take months.
Prepare to enter Canada:Applicants must carry key documents, including a valid passport, POE Letter of Introduction, proof of at least CAD $2,500 in funds, health insurance covering their entire stay, and a return ticket or proof of funds to buy one. Police or medical documents may also be required if requested.
Arrival in Canada:At the border, a Canadian officer will review your documents. If you're eligible and have the required paperwork, a work permit will be issued. Its duration depends on your passport validity, health insurance coverage, and the limits of your permit category.
We can conclude that the International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers a valuable opportunity for young individuals from partner countries to live, work, and explore Canada temporarily. With flexible work options, simplified eligibility, and a straightforward application process, IEC is an excellent pathway to gain international experience while enjoying all that Canada has to offer.
