China K Visa for Foreign Professionals 2025: Application Requirements, Process, and Documents

The China K Visa was introduced by the Chinese government on 1st October 2025. The Chinese K Visa for Foreign Professionals is considered to be modelled on the same lines of the famous H1B visa by the USA and seeks to attract highly skilled STEM talent to China.

How does China K Visa work:
The Chinese government has introduced the China K Visa so as to attract STEM talent to China. The intention of the visa is to bring in foreign talent so as to boost innovation and the economy of China. It is based on the H1B visa that has been instrumental for boosting innovation in the USA.
China K Visa Requirements & Documents:
The minimum eligibility criteria for China K Visa is as follows:
You must have a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field from a recognized university or research institution, either in China or internationally or Young professionals engaged in relevant research work or education in research institutions.
Note: The eligible STEM fields for China K Visa are Computer Science, Biotechnology, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Renewable Energy and Manufacturing. These STEM fields align with Chinese development goals and China K Visa provides excellent opportunities to professionals in these fields to live and work in China to build the future.
A valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank visa pages.
A completed visa application form on COVA or China Online Visa Application System.
A passport size photograph.
A Visa Application Certificate printed from your online approval confirmation.
Proof for potential for innovation such as patents, research publications and entrepreneurial projects etc.
Financial Certificates to show that you can cover travel and living costs.
Medical Examination Certificate.
China K Visa Application Process:
Officially launched on October 1, 2025, K Visa does not require a sponsor during the application stage. The stages of application are as follows:
Head to China Online Visa Application portal and fill out the application form. The application form requires your STEM credentials, educational background and details about your planned activities in China. You will need to upload general visa documents, such as your passport bio page and your passport sized photograph. The system may ask for additional documents if necessary. Once your application is complete, submit it for preliminary review. You will receive updates on your application through the system, including a confirmation email that will lead you to the next step, physical verification.
When the preliminary review is completed, if your review succeeds and your status changes to “Passport to be submitted” or “Approved”, it’s time to download and print the Visa Application Certificate. The Visa Application Certificate; containing a barcode; would be important for further process.
Visit the nearest Chinese Visa Office or Visa Application Service Center with your current passport. If you have an older passport that contains Chinese visas or residence permits, bring those along as well. The passport should have at least six months of validity.
Complete the required fingerprinting in the designated center.
Pay the visa application fees and service fees using acceptable payment methods such as Credit Card or Cash. Note: Visa fees depend upon location.
Once you have secured the visa then proceed to the next step to arrive in China.
Costs for China K Visa:
Applying for China K Visa comes with specific fees, with certain deductions in place till December 31, 2025. Government fees for Non-US citizens ranges from $23 to $68 depending upon the number of entries and the months of validity.
If you need to fast track your visa application then pay an additional $25. Apart from governmental fees there might be additional charges such as service and translation fees. Both of these fees change depending upon location.
Furthermore, one is to note that application fees are non-refundable hence you won’t get it back if your application is rejected. The requirements for this visa have still not been clearly laid out and hence you would require additional consultations.
